Truly he taught us to love one another;

His law is Love, and His gospel is Peace;

Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother,

And in his name all oppression shall cease.37

The verse ends with a joyful proclamation of Christ as Lord, a reminder that Jesus’s antioppression gospel of love and peace was also an announcement of his rule over all creation.38

If Christ was king, and his mission entailed love, peace, and liberating captives, and if God’s kingdom did not include oppression and suffering, how could Christians continue to justify slaveholding?
